Netflix’s favorite dynamic duo is (almost) back!

Grace and Frankie, the Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda-starring comedy that Miley Cyrus dubbed “her show” is gearing up for the second season premiere in May – and PEOPLE has exclusive photos from the upcoming season.

Like last season, show creator Marta Kauffman says that both Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) will be dealing with the challenges set for them last season – finding themselves after the end of both their marriages.

“Part of what they have to do is figure out who they are now that they’re not the people that they thought they were in the relationships they thought they were in,” Kauffman tells PEOPLE. “It’s about identity, what do they want and how do they feel about their lives, and of course, about friendship and having someone who is really there for you.

When viewers last saw Grace, Frankie and their (in-love with each other) ex-husbands Robert (Martin Sheen) and Saul (Sam Waterston), Frankie and Saul had slept together, and Saul was preparing to tell his finacé (and Grace’s ex), Robert.

Kauffman says there will be “serious ramifications” from Frankie and Saul’s dalliance. There’s new romance to come, too: Sam Elliott will join the cast as a new love interest for Grace. And throughout, Kauffman says, the show will tackle the idea of getting older, and how that changes the way people treat you.

“There’s a lot dealing with how people treat you at a certain age,” she says. “How they coddle you, take care of you and make you feel like you’re not worth much.”

And though the show may be focus on the 70-something set, but Kauffman insists there’s something for everyone in Grace and Frankie.

“It’s hopeful,” she says. “You don’t have to be dead because you’re old, and there’s always good things out there in life.”

And for the show’s stars, age is nothing but a number.

“I’m 60, and they’re in their 70s, and they have way more energy than I have,” Kauffman says. “I don’t know how they do it.”

Kauffman says Working with the two screen legends is “amazing.”

“They are very sweet to each other and really help each other out,” Kauffman says. “They’re both such extraordinary pros.”

And rest assured, their off-screen banter is just as good as the on-screen.

“They do spar with each other,” Kauffman said. “They’re just so adorable together.”

Grace and Frankie season 2 premieres May 6 on Netflix.
