Nyle DiMarco may not have had any dance experience before becoming a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, but it turns out that dancing does run in his family.

“My twin brother is deaf like me, but he has a DJ business and loves hip-hop,” the America’s Next Top Model winner tells PEOPLE. “So he dances quite a bit. He tried to teach me to dance when I was growing up, but I never took him up on it. I always said, ‘No. I’m going to go play sports’ or something.”

But now, DiMarco – who vlogs exclusively for PEOPLE – is wowing the judges and fans with his dance ability on season 22 of DWTS.

And DiMarco’s mother, who is also deaf, was on hand to support him in rehearsals this past week.

“My mom was thrilled to be here,” DiMarco told PEOPLE after Monday’s show. “It’s so amazing to see that support from my family. They know I’ve never danced before, but they’ve encouraged me every day.”

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
