Dancing with the Stars' Mark Ballas Sitting Out This Week After Injury

Posted on

Pro dancer Mark Ballas sat out Monday’s Dancing with the Stars after injuring his back during rehearsals on Sunday. Footage from the rehearsal showed him lying on the dance floor in pain.

“My back just pinched funny. I’m hurting,” said Ballas. “I’m in trouble.”

His partner, UFC fighter Paige VanZant, performed with Alan Bersten, a former So You Think You Can Dance contestant and current member of the DWTS dance troupe – and the couple didn’t miss a beat.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Monday’s DWTS.

She earned rave reviews from the judges, including from Len Goodman who called it, “the best dance so far on season 22.” The judges awarded her 24 out of 30.

Ballas appeared on the show to give an update on his health, saying he’d gone in for tests and was optimistic.

“Just to be safe, we’re going to do everything smoothed out, but I’m hopeful I’ll be back,” said Ballas.

This isn’t the first injury to plague season 22 of the dance competition series. Contestant Nyle DiMarco went to the hospital to get stitches after an accident during the first week of rehearsal, but was able to perform.

“Mark has been so supportive and just a lot of fun to work with,” VanZant told PEOPLE after last Monday’s DWTS premiere. “I don’t know how I’d do this without him.”

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
