He’s on a Dancing high!
J.R. Martinez became the first contestant to earn a perfect score on Dancing with the Stars Monday night, when he performed a waltz that judge Bruno Tonioli called “divine.” And then, he and partner Karina Smirnoff did it again – earning a total of 60 points – with their second dance, an “instant” jive.
“We’re on cloud 60 right now,” an excited Martinez told PEOPLE after Monday’s show.
“This is as good as it gets,” Smirnoff said.
Martinez admits he was initially reluctant to take on the waltz but once he was able to “touch up” on the steps, he said he “felt really good coming into” a night of double performances.
“My expectations were of course, trying to get the first 30 of the season,” he said. “But to get the 60, the perfect score in two dances is … money.”
But he’s got very little time to celebrate his accomplishment. The plan – if he survives Tuesday’s elimination – is to go “back to work.”
“It’s a week-to-week competition That’s been the biggest thing, I think, to push me through, to keep myself humble,” he said, adding that he’ll “push hard” every day.
