Alexa PenaVega and pro Mark Ballas brought a little Tim Burton flavor to Monday’s Halloween-themed Dancing with the Stars.

The pair struggled last week, landing in the bottom two, but managed to earn straight 9s this week by paying homage to the 1990 Johnny Depp classic.

PenaVega chanelled Winona Ryder‘s Kim, while Ballas managed to dance in a full Edward costume, complete with giant scissors for hands.

“It was a super boost in confidence to get that feedback from the judges tonight,” she told PEOPLE. “We worked so hard, and I just wanted to go out there and show everyone that I really want to be here.”

In her exclusive PEOPLE blog with husband Carlos PenaVega, PenaVega revealed how difficult preparing for the week had been.

“Your heart just drops to the pit of your stomach. Going through that is scary,” she wrote of landing in the bottom two last week. “But I also see it as a blessing in disguise. That moment bonded Mark and me in a way that we hadn’t been bonded before. He grabbed me and held on to me as we went through that together.”

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
