One of the things that people notice about Benedict Cumberbatch is his velvety baritone.
And R. Kelly is, of course, known for his … uh, “florid” lyrics.
So naturally, when Jimmy Kimmel decided to combine those two, he struck gold.
Kimmel had Cumberbatch on his show Wednesday, as the actor’s promoting his role as Smaug the dragon in The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, the second installment in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. (Between “giant dragon” and Khan in this summer’s Star Trek: Into Darkness, Cumberbatch really cornered the “silky-voiced villain” market in 2013.)
And amidst the screaming from the ladies in the audience, Kimmel managed to find a quiet moment to have Cumberbatch give a dramatic reading of “Genius,” a song from R. Kelly’s new album, Black Panties.
Needless to say, hearing lyrics like “Go to sleep, and when we wake up I’ll hit that thing again, promise,” delivered in that brooding-but-seductive purr, the audience goes a little nuts, but Cumberbatch retains his cool throughout. What a pro.
No word yet on whether Smaug will be reading from the works of Marvin Gaye in any Hobbit special features.
