Just ask Nick Viall. After getting dumped twice on The Bachelorette, the 35-year-old Wisconsin native found himself on the other side of the breakup on Tuesday’s Bachelor in Paradise finale – denying Jen Saviano of the proposal she so badly wanted (and that every other woman the finale received).
After the episode aired, Viall took to Instagram to express just how hard it was to make that decision.
“It’s not easy saying goodbye to someone as incredible as Jen Saviano,” he captioned a shot of the two during their would-be proposal. “One of the most beautiful, graceful, and intelligent women I’ve ever met.”
“So lucky to have had her in my life,” he continued. “She deserves the world.”
As for Saviano … let’s just say she handled the split a little differently.
The 26-year-old fashion boutique owner posted a photo of herself on Instagram Tuesday night, showing viewers what she did moments after Viall broke her heart.
Sitting on her hotel bed in the same outfit she wore to her Bachelor in Paradise final rose ceremony, Saviano ate a slice of cheese pizza and held a quarter-empty bottle of white wine.
She explained, “When you get dumped, here’s what you do: You order an XL pizza, bottle of wine and watch How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days… because you know, I’m good at that.”
Saviano hashtagged the shot “#singleAF.”
On Tuesday’s finale, Saviano told Viall she felt closer to him more than ever after a night in the Fantasy Suite – and could see a proposal happening. “I’ve fallen in love with you, and I want to continue to fall if you’re willing to catch me,” she told him on the beach later that day.
Despite picking out a ring with Neil Lane for the third time on the ABC franchise, Viall broke into tears, telling Saviano that while he wanted to tell her he was in love with her, something in his heart wouldn’t let him and was telling him it was time to say goodbye.
“My biggest fear is that I’m going to regret it,” he confessed. “I just feel like you deserve better than me.”

And while it didn’t work out for the two of them this time around, Viall will have yet another shot to find love when he steps into the shoes of The Bachelor for the show’s upcoming 21st season.
“[I] Couldn’t feel more fortunate,” he wrote on Instagram after the news broke. “[I’m] Incredibly thankful for all the support. We are going to have some fun!”
Bachelor host Chris Harrison is excited for Viall’s journey too, telling PEOPLE: “So many names get thrown around and at the end of the day, as producers, we have to try and think and decide what’s best for the franchise and who is the most deserving and sincere person. At the end of the day, we all looked around the table and nobody could say it wasn’t Nick. You can’t shoot holes at the fact that he is just the most deserving and sincere person.”
Viall’s season of The Bachelor will premiere in January on ABC.
