Emma Bunton, 41, also known as Baby Spice from the Spice Girls, is making her debut on American TV this summer as an “architect” on the reality competition Boy Band — and she says the gig couldn’t be a better fit.

“I loved boy bands growing up,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “And I listen to them now because I’ve got children [Beau, 9, and Tate, 6] who love them. When they came to me with this idea I just thought, ‘It’s perfect for me.'”

Boy Band will be hosted by singer Rita Ora and features three boy band “architects” (or judges): Bunton, the Backstreet Boys‘ Nick Carter and hit producer Timbaland.

Considering her own experience with a pop group, will Bunton have any advice for the contestants on how to best work as a group?

“You have to fit in and respect the other guys in the band,” she says. “It’s important that you can look out for each other and rely on each other. Work hard, talk things out, and really work together. Talking makes things less of a problem. Your really have to work well in a team if you want to be successful.”

The singer, who was just 19 when she got her start with the Spice Girls, says her own rise to fame couldn’t have been better.

“I feel very lucky,” she says. “I had such an awesome experience. It was just the most amazing journey with my best mates. Because we were so young and couldn’t quite believe what was happening, we were just kind of going with the flow. We were conquering all these countries, and it was just like, wow.”

Luckily, all five girls became like a real family.

“It’s a crazy industry, so when you’ve got each other, it makes such a big difference. It was hugely important to have my girls with me,” she says.

As for her own kids, are they excited to move to Los Angeles for the summer to watch their mom up on stage?

“Oh they can’ wait!” she says. It’s perfect timing for them because it’s summer. They are going to love it. They’re already asking to come to the studio, so I’m sure they’ll be helping out!”

Boy Band debuts on June 22 on ABC.
