In 2008, Mario Lopez seemed sure about one thing: he’d keep himself covered in public around cameras.

But after telling PEOPLE, “My shirtless photo-shoot days are behind me,” the Extra host, who was covered in gold paint, showed off his stellar physique on Sunday while shooting promos for his latest underwear line, MaLo by Mario Lopez, which also includes undershirts and workout tees.

“That was true, as far as posing just to pose goes,” Lopez told PEOPLE of his vow to keep his shirt on. “But I’m selling underwear! There’s an intention there and a purpose. I’ve kept true to my word and I’ve never posed just to pose for artistic sake or whatever. And believe me, I get asked a lot.”

Lopez’s line, currently sold at Target, is about to launch in a large selection of Kmart stores beginning on Sept. 2.

The former Saved by the Bell star, who always wanted his own line of apparel, said, “Why not start with underwear? Everyone needs them, right? With all the working out and the sweat and the things that guys do, these really hold up their quality.”

As for the accompanying gold-themed ads, Lopez said, “I wanted the campaign to be cool and kind of sexy, too.” But not so sexy? The painting process, which took an hour.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought, but it was really tough to get off,” he explained of the paint. “I had to take a few showers and there was a lot of scrubbing. I felt like an Oscar or a trophy. But then I started to feel like a tin man.”

Among the fans of his sexy snapshots? His fiancée, Courtney Mazza.

“She’s used to [nudity] around our house,” Lopez said with a laugh. “But no, she’s smart, she gets it, she knows it’s an underwear line, so it is what it is. It’s not so bad. She’s super cool.
