For Ashley Greene, nothing beats a great pair of jeans. “I’m all over the spectrum with jeans,” she told PEOPLE recently. “I grew up in Florida, so I’m really big on jean short cut-offs. I’m also a big fan of either the super-loungy boyfriend supersized jeans or a great pair of skinnies.”

Speaking to PEOPLE at West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont for a party celebrating Nylon magazine’s August denim issue (the Breaking Dawn star is the cover girl), Greene, the face of DKNY Jeans, elaborated on her love of all things denim — and stressed the importance of fit.

“A lot of times with me, [jeans] fit at the waist but not necessarily on the lower part of my body because I tend to be more narrow,” she explained. “It’s honestly worth investing in your favorite two pairs and getting them tailored to fit to your body.”

When it comes to wearing this season’s trendy colored denim styles, Greene chooses wisely. “I always tell people to err on the side of caution and get a size up because they are not as forgiving as dark-wash jeans,” she explained. “White jeans are unforgiving and any pastel-colored jean is extremely unforgiving.”

To maintain the desired fit, Greene — who also stars in the upcoming horror film, The Apparition — suggests throwing colored jeans in the dryer from time to time. “Generally you wouldn’t dry your jeans, but you want them to shrink back,” she shared. “They’re kind of a one-wear pair of jeans.”

Known for a killer sense of style, Greene admitted that she’s picked up a few great tips from stylists, including her current advisor, Cristina Ehrlich. Her best advice? “A high heel makes everything look better. It kind of brings everything up.” Tell us: What do you think about when shopping for jeans?
