The diamond, called the “Pink Star” and mined in South Africa in 1999, is a one of a kind and is expected to surpass a record for the most expensive gem ever sold. That record was set three years ago by the “Graff Pink” diamond, which measured in at 24.78 carats and sold for $46 million.
“This is a very exciting diamond,” David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby’s European jewelry division told the paper. “Apart from the words about how rare it is, it’s just such a beautiful stone. Pink diamonds, in my experience, are the most desired of all the color. I’ve never shown a pink diamond to somebody who then hasn’t liked it. It’s a joyful color. It makes people happy. When you are looking at a diamond like this, you are looking at a real treasure of the earth.”
The Pink Star diamond was last sold privately in 2007.
