What We're Buying: Summer-Friendly Shorts, Shirts and Shoes - and the Ultimate Sports Bra

Posted on

Have you bought anything you loved lately? In the PEOPLE StyleWatch offices, the answer to that question is usually “Yes.” This week, we’re all about fancy shorts for the office, a versatile shirt, some sexy metallic shoes and what one editor called “the holy grail of sports bras.”

John Soper, Editorial Assistant: Summers in N.Y.C. are hot. I don’t just mean an uncomfortably warm dry heat — more like, It’s so humid out that I am now completely drenched in sweat just from standing on the subway platform for five minutes. And according to the Farmer’s Almanac, our favorite sunshine season is supposed to be at its worst this year.

In order to show up at work without looking like I just completed a half marathon, I decided to invest in something that would keep me cool and chic – enter this pair of shorts from Zara. I wouldn’t normally consider Bermudas a work-appropriate article of clothing, but when I saw these dark floral-print jacquard beauties on the hanger, I knew I had to give them a try. The pattern and material are dressy enough that I can pair them with a button-down and blazer and still manage to look ready for my day (and keep my body temperature below 120 degrees). Our Style and Beauty Director even said she would wear them — sorry Andrea, boys only! (But they do have a miniskirt if you want to give the trend a try.)

Leslie Fremar, celebrity stylist: In the summer, I’m always looking for easy, comfortable classic pieces that can transition from day to night, beach to restaurant. users often ask which pieces they should invest in that are stylish, but still offer longevity and versatility. I tell people they should avoid trendy “investment” pieces, rather opting for one or two classic items if you’re going to spend more money.

My amazing lightweight button down indigo striped shirt from Nili Lotan is pure summer perfection and is one of my favorites. The piece also transitions nicely from spring into fall. Because it’s made from a very fine linen it can be worn in so many different ways — buttoned up under a blazer at night or to work, or with cute shorts for shopping or lunch. My personal favorite is wearing this shirt unbuttoned over a bathing suit as a cover up and you can throw it in your vacation bag to give a variety of outfit options without overstuffing your suitcase.

Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I’ve been wearing the same bulky sports bras and sorority tees to work out for [redacted] years for two reasons: One, I assumed I needed huge straps for support and two, trying on workout clothes sucks. (All that spandex!) But lately I’ve felt shamed into stepping it up a bit. So I took a deep breath, walked into the Lorna Jane store in SF — and totally changed my outlook on the whole shopping experience.

The very patient sales associate brought me a ton of stuff to try, including this thin-strap Pammy bra. I protested: “That’s not holding anything up.” Then I tried it. THEN I texted my mom and sister: “I’ve found the holy grail of sports bras.” It’s incredibly comfortable, super supportive, keeps everything firmly in place and has some fun extras like a clip to make the straps racerback and removable padding (seen here giving me a boost under my Lorna Jane tee — I’m seriously addicted now). I’ve worn it jogging, to CardioBarre and on (ugh) a hike, and I’m just as obsessed now as I was in the store.

Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: If you were to look under my desk right now, you would find a mini mountain of stacked heels. I’m a little bit obsessed with the style. They feel a more polished than a wedge, but are way more comfortable than a pump or strappy stiletto, so they’ve become my go-to shoe for summer. And basically I can’t walk near a shoe store without checking out the stacked heel selection.

That’s exactly what happened on a quick trip to Bloomingdales last weekend. These gold Coach “Lexey” sandals caught my eye and they were the only pair left in my size. Plus, they were on sale with an additional 30% off. It was meant to be.
