We Tried It: Setting Sprays To Make Your Makeup Last On Your Wedding Day

Posted on

Who Tried It: Kaitlyn Frey, Style & Beauty Assistant

Why We Tried It: I like to wear a full face of makeup on the daily (not because I’m self-conscious, but because I just love playing with product), so I’m always on the hunt for a setting spray that will allow my hard work to withstand sweaty subway rides, end-of-day gym sessions and happy hour with friends. I also faced a dilemma: my foundation almost always transfers onto my boyfriend’s J.Crew polos and Charles Tyrwhitt button-ups when I lean my head on his shoulder, and (needless to say) he’s Over It. I needed something to make my makeup completely budgeproof — for real.

A slew of makeup setting sprays have come out that accommodate everyone’s price point, and with spring wedding season just about starting, I knew it was time to put them to the test for the greater good of society. Whether you plan on walking down the aisle sometime soon or just want your makeup to not melt off as the temperature rises, a setting spray’s a smart addition to your makeup bag. Keep reading to learn what differentiates each one, and which spray made my makeup survive an intense Flywheel class.

Marc Jacobs

What It Is: Marc Jacobs Re(Cover) Perfecting Coconut Setting Mist

How Much It Is: $39

What It Does: This micro-mist claims to give you a dewy complexion and keep makeup intact for up to 24 hours, while also keeping skin hydrated with its skin-loving ingredients like coconut, milk and water.

How It Worked: The day I spritzed my face with this mist, it was the first 70°+ day in N.Y.C. in months. It held my foundation in place and didn’t smudge my non-waterproof mascara, which is all I was looking for. I loved it so much, I even tossed it in my bag as I walked around the city enjoying the warm air. My favorite part: its subtle coconut scent. With each spray, I closed my eyes and for a split second, felt like I was sitting on a tropical island instead of a wooden bench in Tompkins Square Park.

Kat Von D

What It Is: Kat Von D Lock-It Makeup Setting Mist

How Much It Is: $26

What It Does: Thanks to its cucumber-infused formula and weightless micro-mist sprayer, this setting spray locks in makeup all day and soothes skin for both oily and dry skin types.

How It Worked: My favorite part of this spray: its über fresh cucumber-y scent. I definitely applied way more than necessary (it just smells SO good!) but thankfully its fine mist sprays made it so that I didn’t look like a hot/wet mess. Instead, it secured my makeup in place for the first hot and humid day of the year in New York, which means I plan on this being my go-t0 all summer long.

What It Is: L’Oréal Paris Infalliable Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray

How Much It Is: $16.99

What It Does: Your makeup won’t settle into fine lines, smudge or need touch-ups with this lightweight, oil-free mist.

How It Worked: To say this setting spray exceeded my expectations is an understatement. They day I tried this out, I wore a full face of makeup (complete with high coverage foundation, blush, bronzer, shadow and more) forgetting i had a Flywheel class scheduled right after work. I committed quite the skin sin and worked out with all my makeup on, expecting it to drip right off.

Boy, was I wrong. I panted like a dog throughout the class (working out isn’t my thing), but when I looked in the mirror after, I looked a little sweaty, but all my mascara and foundation base stayed totally put. Even after cooling down and going home, my roommates couldn’t even tell I had been sweating away during my class. I call that a win!

What It Is: Boscia White Charcoal Mattifying Makeup Setting Spray

How Much It Is: $38

What It Does: Not only will these spray hold your makeup in place, but it also claims to  minimizing shine and pore size with white charcoal in its ingredient deck.

How It Worked: I usually like my skin to be on the dewier side, so I felt a little apprehensive trying this mattifying setting spray at first. To put it simply, I’ve been converted. Every time I walked past a mirror after using this, I did a double take. Why? My skin looked more poreless and airbrushed than it ever had before. And the kicker: it truly stayed looking that way all day long.

What It Is: Cover FX Illuminating Setting Spray

How Much It Is: $31

What It Does: On top of giving your makeup serious staying power, with each spritz, this spray delivers an illuminated glow. And the more you apply, the more glowy you get.

How It Worked: For a bride that wants a little extra dewiness on her wedding day, I highly suggest this spray from Cover FX. Its sprayer emits a super fine mist (like, perfume-bottle level), so just the right amount of product lands on your skin without making the makeup messy. Did it make my makeup last as long as the others? I’m not sure, but I can say it gave me a beautiful glow (sans shininess) all day.

What It Is: Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray

How Much It Is: $31

What It Does: This mist is made with patented Temperature Control Technology, which means its made to keep foundation, eyeshadow, blush and concealer in place — no matter how hot it gets outside.

How It Worked: This setting spray’s name says it all. I wore this one with a full face of heavily contoured and smoky eye makeup to see if it stood the test. The verdict? It totally did. After a few hours on the dance floor in a crowded club, my skin had a healthy, dewy glow instead of the hot sweaty mess I expected to see when I checked myself out in the mirror at the end of the night.
