We Tried It: Eyebrow Tinting

You’d think that years of writing about makeup (preceded by years of reading about makeup) would mean I’d be totally prepared for the “everyone will do their own makeup” email from my friend, in whose June 1 wedding I was a bridesmaid. But since I was terrified of being That Girl in all her precious wedding photos, I immediately hopped on Facebook to analyze what I could be doing better, facewise.

My conclusion? I wasn’t doing enough (read: anything) with my brows. For all that women’s mag blather about brows framing the face, I was leaving them completely unattended sans a little tweezing as needed, to the detriment of my party pics.

So I set up an appointment at N.Y.C.’s Browhaus, a London transplant devoted just to — well, you guessed it — which has fans including Olivia Wilde. I sat in the industrial chair in some incredibly low lighting while Tiffany, who was very sweet and knowledgeable, talked me through the procedure. I was a little nervous about her doing it in the dark, but she switched on a clinical-looking light and got to work.

Perhaps sensing my hesitation, she told me she’d start slow (both with tinting and threading) and keep going as I gave her the okay. As she said, “I can always do more, but once it’s done, you’re stuck with it!” And her confidence inspired me, leading me to leave the salon with brows darker and more shaped than I had initially planned, which I loved (but which definitely startled my husband).

Overall it was painless, quick and easy, though at $45 for a treatment that lasts about a month, it was more than I think I’d ordinarily spend without a special occasion coming up. However, I loved how “done” my face looked even without a stitch of makeup on, and I think it made a difference in the pictures without being so noticeable as to have friends wondering if I had work done. Next time a bride tells me I’m on my own for makeup at her wedding, I’m definitely hopping back in that chair.
