You may recognize Martha Hunt from your latest Victoria’s Secret catalog. Or from her Free People campaign ads. Or even her guest appearance in Taylor Swift‘s “Bad Blood” music video. But this summer, she’s gracing the cover of Miami’s luxury magazine,
, and spilling all about how she got her modeling start, what it’s really like to wear lingerie in front of all of those cameras and her highly documented friendship with Swift (and the rest of the star-studded squad).

Like most Victoria’s Secret Angels, Hunt didn’t earn her wings overnight. The supermodel started off in catalogs, long before being tapped for the runway.
“At the time, I was shooting a lot of their catalogs, and one day it just so happened that Ed Razek [chief marketing officer of L Brands, Victoria’s Secret’s parent company] came by the shoot, and everything changed from that moment on,” she told
. “He immediately was interested in me, and he took a chance and decided to put me on an advertising job. That was huge for me because it took me from just being one of the catalog girls to being one of the featured girls.”
But being “one of the featured girls” isn’t easy either. As an Angel, you’re expected to wear a lot of lingerie — something the star has gotten used to over the years.
“You don’t want to over-think it. You want to still be yourself, but the best version of yourself,” she told of the mag her experience with modeling lingerie. “You just train really hard and eat healthy. You don’t want to be too thin; you want to be a good example of a feminine woman’s body who’s very fit and who takes care of herself.”
But being fit is more than just looking great in lingerie — it’s about feeling great, too. The supermodel, who was previously diagnosed with scoliosis (a condition in which the spine grows in a curvature), now makes exercise a priority — but she steers clear of high-intensity activities.
“I try to keep it in a very low impact — I have scoliosis, so exercises can be really hard on my back, whether it’s too much running, jumping or boxing,” she said. “I’ll do those things once in a while, but I keep it mostly pilates, resistance-band based, softer exercises that build strength from inside the muscle.”
When she’s not strutting the catwalk in her wings or posing on the shore of some beach, you can most likely find Hunt hanging with the rest of her crew, which also happens to be Swift’s famous squad.
“I can’t say enough good things about her — I admire her so much as a person and as a role model for young women,” she told the mag of her relationship with Swift. “We need more people like her who really want to bring women together, and not over-sexualize themselves as that being what makes them worthy. Plus, she’s just talented, and she’s just the best.”
Hunt adds that, at the end of the day, it’s the relationships with all of her friends, including Swift, that help her navigate the crazy industry she’s a part of.
“A lot of my friends — Taylor included — we all come from similar backgrounds of smaller towns and hardworking families that are very family oriented. I think that makes such a big difference when you go off into the world trying to achieve something, knowing that somebody will be there in case you fail, somebody will be there to hug you and cook you a nice meal.”
