In honor of Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards and our favorite holiday, Throwback Thursday, we remember some of our favorite moments from the SAGs red carpets of years past.
By now you’ve seen the Oscar nominations, you’ve Tweeted your fury about the snubs and you’ve moved on to wondering what they’re going to wear. So for our last #TBT tribute to SAGs of years past, we rounded up some of the most noteworthy looks from this year’s nominees. The envelope, please…
First up is Julia Roberts, who attended on the arm of then-squeeze Benjamin Bratt in 2001 — and went home with her first SAG for Erin Brockovich. While the SAGs today is an ultra-glam affair, back then it was no big deal to show up in a brown tee, drawstring purse and some pretty daytime hair. We love this look on her — but we expect to see her pulling out all the stops on Saturday.
Then we have Jennifer Lawrence, who kicked off a three-year nominated streak with her role in Winter’s Bone. She was still a relative red carpet newbie when she chose this vivid pink Oscar de la Renta number with a black velvet bow. Clearly she wasn’t afraid to make a statement despite being almost unknown at that point — and it paid off.
Cate Blanchett is now known as more of a red carpet queen (uh, did you see her Golden Globes dress?) but she looked surprisingly sweet and girlish in 1999, when she wore this cap-sleeve lace number with center-parted hair and silver sandals. It was a stark contrast to her regal looks in Elizabeth, the film for which she was nominated that year.
Finally, Leonardo DiCaprio in a tux eight years ago. Just to prove that the man does not age.
Who had your most memorable fashion flashback? Tell us below! And be sure to tune into the SAG Awards Saturday, Jan. 18, at 8 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS. Watch along with us at @peopleredcarpet, and tell us: Who are you most excited to see on the carpet? What is your favorite SAG look of all time?
