Short-Haired Girls, Kristen Stewart's Knotted Mohawk Is Your New Summer Updo (and Here's How to Get It)

Ever since Kristen Stewart chopped and dyed her previously long brunette strands platinum blonde, we’ve been keeping close tabs on her newly lightened tresses. Why? Because she’s been serving up some serious Pinterest-worthy looks for short-haired girls (like the author of this piece), and her latest, an edgy knotted mohawk, is practically begging to be added to your board.

Which is why we’ve tapped the mastermind behind the cool-girl look, celebrity hairstylist Kylee Heath, for all of the details!

For the Cinema Society screening of Stewart’s latest film, Cafe Society, in N.Y.C., Heath says she and the actress put their creative heads together to come up with the “modern half-up, knotted mohawk” style.

“[The look] was definitely a collaboration,” Heath tells PeopleStyle. “The [Chanel] dress had a medieval romance feel with a cool twist, so we wanted to complement it without being too literal. I knew I wanted to do something with knots instead of braids, and we decided on a mohawk.”

But because Stewart is now living the bob life, Heath reveled in the challenge of styling the star’s short hair: “People always assume there isn’t much you can do with short hair, but I disagree,” she says. “You can find inspiration from any long hair do and tweak it a little to make it suitable for a bob. It’s also nice because there is less hair to deal with, so whatever you create at the roots can be the look and you don’t have to worry about ends getting in the way.”

To get the look, Heath began by raking Kérastase Volumifique Mousse into Stewart’s damp, clean hair, along with a few spritzes of Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray, to protect from heat, smooth split ends and add volume.

After blowing-out the star’s strands with a round brush, Heath added some texture using an Enzo Milano iron, and sectioned off the mohawk, clipping away the left and right sides. After smoothing the center-part action with a couple of pumps of Iles Formula Haute Performance Finishing Serum, Heath took a section of hair about an inch from the hairline, broke it into two parts and lightly teased them before “literally tying the hair into a knot.”

The hair pro continued creating knots, an inch apart from one another, leaving out the ends, which created the line of knots that looked “almost like a French braid.” Once Heath reached the mid-back of Stewart’s head, she secured with a clear elastic before tying it into a knot, leaving the rest of the hair out to soften the style.

If you thought Stewart’s knotted style looked familiar, you might be on to something. In fact, the star’s mohawk moment isn’t the first time we’ve seen a solo center twist act on the red carpet.

Busy Philipps tried a similar version of the style, but with a full-fledged braid and with the rest of her hair pulled back, for an appearance on Watch What Happens Live on Thursday evening, while short-haired star Ruby Rose pulled off a three-plait look (with a center braid) for the Netflix Night in Seoul, South Korea last month.

So, we’ve got to ask: Could Stewart’s knotted mohawk be the new It summer style? All signs point to yes.
