Selena Gomez: On Splurges, Sales and Celebrating Her Birthday All Week

Selena Gomez may be all grown up — but don’t look for her to be filling her closet with designer finds anytime soon.

Though she loves to borrow pricey gowns for the red carpet, “I don’t even want to know how much they usually cost,” she told PEOPLE, “but it’s been really fun for me to dress up and get to meet different designers. I don’t think I could ever actually purchase a huge gown unless it’s my wedding dress!”

That said, the newly 21-year-old admits to being a sucker for an occasional splurge. Her first big purchase with her own paycheck? “Dolce & Gabbana! I remember being really young and obsessed with Dolce, and I did buy a pair of black heels in Paris one time,” she said. “They were cute, strappy, little heels. Sometimes you just have to!”

More often, though, you’ll see her in affordable finds. “[My closet] is just kind of a mix. I have really great [designer] gifts from people, and my stylist will give me something cute. But other than that, it usually seems to be off the sales rack or just stuff that I enjoy,” Gomez said.

The singer channeled that practicality into her latest Dream Out Loud collection, which she unveiled at the N.Y.C. Kmart flagship on Wednesday. “I always make sure that it’s accessible for everyone to enjoy,” Gomez said. “I’ve been working with the collection since I was about 17, so I feel like the older I get, the more my fashion evolves as well.”

And speaking of getting older, she’s been celebrating her milestone birthday all week — with an impromptu listening party of her new album, Stars Dance, at the Kmart party, and her birthday dinner with friends on Monday, where she rocked cute white short-shorts and a crop top, a look which she called “really cute and appropriate for my 21st.”

Stay tuned for round three, a costumed birthday bash this weekend, about which she teased, “That’s been a process in the making of creating my little gypsy-themed outfit.” Hey, a girl can’t be practical all the time!
