When Kevin Durant designs a shoe with Nike, he likes to use his personal experiences as inspiration. In October, he unveiled the KD VI PB&J in honor of his favorite childhood sandwich. Now the Oklahoma City Thunder forward is paying respect to his late Aunt Pearl (who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2000) with a brand-new sneaker that marks his first foray into women’s shoe design.
“I made a promise to myself to always honor my Aunt Pearl for the example she set, and the encouragement she gave me to follow my dreams,” Durant, 25, said in a statement.
The KD VI Aunt Pearl features a pink rosebud pattern with bright blue highlights, which is similar to the print on the robe his aunt used to wear. The matching T-shirt and hat will also be available to purchase on Feb. 27 at Nike.com and proceeds from the shoe will go to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for women’s cancer research.
We can’t to see what the NBA star comes up with next (and we’re kind of hoping he rocks a men’s version of these on the court). What do you think of Durant’s new shoe and the sentiment behind it? Will you be saving up for a pair?
