Elizabeth Smart went through dozens of dresses until she found the perfect wedding gown, but her now-husband, Matthew Gilmour, had a much easier time finding her engagement ring.
The 22-year-old Scotland native purchased Smart’s sparkler at a Salt Lake City jeweler, choosing a smaller sapphire because he knew his bride “wouldn’t want a lot of bling,” he tells PEOPLE.
When it came time to propose in January, Gilmour kept the ring in his pocket for a solid day, where it was “burning a hole,” he says. But once the time was right, he popped the question on a bench in the foothills, overlooking the lights of Salt Lake City.
