Celebrity hairstylist Scotty Cunha spends a lot of time in the Kardashian and Jenner sisters’ glam rooms, which means he has a lot of thoughts about what’s going on on their heads.

So we had a feeling he’d have opinions on whether he prefers styling them when they are brunettes or going through a blonde phase, and though he was diplomatic, he does say brunettes require a little more work.

“Your hair needs more texture when you’re a brunette versus when your hair is blonde,” Cunha told PEOPLE at the  Dyson Supersonic hairdryer west coast launch event. “There’s more lightness and easiness [when you’re blonde] so a little bit goes a long way. Brunettes need a little bit more texture and definition and product, whereas blondes, the beach waves look good because it [already looks] piece-y.”

Regardless of their hair color, the sisters aren’t afraid to take risks — and start trends.

“They’re pretty fearless,” he says. “Kylie with wigs, Kendall’s topknot, Kim doing the super-sleek, gel-backed look, and Khloe with the lobs and super blonde. They’ve started a million hair trends!”

And they’re never afraid to try new things.

“They’re really great about listening to what I want,” he says. “They trust the glam squad!”

As for which sister is best at doing their own hair, Cunha says it’s definitely Kendall Jenner.

“Kendall does the model-off-duty look,” he says. “She’s always throwing her hair up. She doesn’t give a f—!”

But when he’s behind the look, you can count on one thing: effortless, beachy waves that have become a Kardashian signature. “I’m really into the messy beach wave — that’s my signature — so I just spray a texture spray in and then I revamp a blow dry with the spray and the diffuser,” Cunha says. To achieve the look, he sprays one to two-inch vertical sections of dry hair with a texture spray, and then scrunches it while using the diffuser attachment. “I don’t have to use a curling iron, which is great for me and is less damaging for the hair,” he says.
