At first glance, Mandy Moore’s 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards look is a straightforward blue sequin slipdress by Ralph Lauren Collection. But it turns out, there’s so much more than meets the eye.

The look worn by the 33-year-old star of This Is Us, which was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the SAG Awards, was actually a throwback to a linen dress with navy stripes (also by Ralph Lauren Collection) that she originally wore when she was 20 years old in 2004, during the premiere of Saved in Los Angeles.

“I think it’s very symbolic of her rebirth,” her stylist Erica Cloud tells PEOPLE, referencing Moore’s return to Hollywood after taking a break for several years. “It was such a cool look then, we thought, ‘Why not revisit it now?’ It’s a beautiful, elegant silhouette. For her, I think it shows she’s still herself, but just an updated version. Also, the color of it is like the ocean, so it’s like a rebirth from the sea, so to speak.”

Cloud worked closely with the team at Ralph Lauren to recreate the look in a modern way, fit for 2018. They went back and forth with sketches during the design process. Then, to make the fit perfect, the team at Ralph Lauren actually sent Cloud and Moore the original dress from 2004. “She tried it on, and it still fit her perfectly!” says Cloud.

Adds the stylist, “We then made tiny changes to it, and they custom-made the sequin fabric for us and made the dress, and we got it the Friday morning before the show.”

While it was Cloud’s idea to remake the look—it was one of the stylist’s favorite looks of all time—Moore was really into it, too. “She loved the idea of it,” says Cloud, who completed the ensemble with Niwaka earrings “that look like starfish, to go with the theme,” a Judith Leiber clutch and Stuart Weitzman heels.

Plus, not only is the color of the dress different, Moore herself is also physically different. Gone is the mega tan and pixie cut in favor of loose waves and a subtle glow. “She doesn’t have that short pixie haircut anymore, so it’s going to translate differently,” says Cloud, and “that’s what I love about it. There is something so classic about her that both dresses hold up through time.”

Adds Cloud: “There’s a difference when you are coming into your own earlier in life and owning it that way and there is a difference with now, experience and knowledge and all of those things—she wears it now in probably a different way. She feels very confident in wearing the dress.”

Ultimately, says Cloud, “It’s still her, it’s just a different version of her—but both are sexy.”

The 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on both TNT and TBS.
