If you were into the navy jumpsuit Rihanna wore in December (a piece from her forthcoming River Island capsule collection), you’ll love the latest dirt on her upcoming line: It turns out the person she envisions wearing her designs is someone who sounds a lot like herself.
“[I’m] designing clothes for young women with young, sassy personalities,” the singer says in a behind-the-scenes video, originally posted by Vogue UK. And she admits this has been something she’s wanted to do for a long time. “Every time I saw something on a rack there was something I wanted to do to change it, and so I thought that the only way I could do that is by designing.”
In the video, Rihanna joins co-designer Adam Selman to look over sketches and assist on model fittings — and even better, the clip gives us a few quick glimpses of the actual clothes.
There are backless striped tops, lots of floral print, swimwear or bodysuits (considering this is Rihanna we’re talking about, we’re guessing the latter), flouncy mini skirts, maxi skirts and billowy pants — all reflecting Rihanna’s current love for ’90s fashion.
And though Rihanna drew on her own wardrobe for inspiration, she insists you don’t have to be a willowy, daring pop star to enjoy the clothes. “I wanted all types of girls to really want to wear this and feel comfortable in it but still feel edgy,” she explains. “I wanted character to come out in the clothes without trying too hard. It’s just simple.”
We’ll be able to check out the collection in full when it debuts at London Fashion Week on Feb. 16 and once it hits stores in March. Tell us: Are you excited to see more of Rihanna’s line?
