We Tried It: A Red Wine Facial (With the Opposite Effect of a Red Wine Hangover)

What Is It: The Spa on Rodeo’s Divine Rouge organic skin treatment uses red wine extracts to purify and detox the skin, and promises to leave your face with a youthful glow.

Who Tried It: Gabrielle Olya, PEOPLE writer and reporter

Level of Difficulty (from 1 to impossible): 1. The facial is extremely relaxing (minus the extractions!) and just requires you to lay back and enjoy.

I am an avid drinker of red wine (Wine Wednesday is my favorite weekly “holiday”), but I had no idea it could have any benefits for my skin, so I was intrigued to try out the Divine Rouge facial offered at Beverly Hills’ The Spa on Rodeo, which boasts celebrity clients including Ryan Lochte and the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

The 60-minute treatment uses a variety of wine-adjacent organic products that contain the tannins and polyphenols found in a good merlot for a variety of skin benefits. The facial begins with a red wine-based cleanser — which smelled amazing — and is followed by a serum that contains the antioxidants from red grapes combined with collagen stimulators, hydrators, firming properties and soothing elements to boost skin cells, followed by a red wine extract eye cream to lock in moisture.

After another moisturizer, a mask is applied containing red wine and grape skin to leave skin with a youthful glow.

The Verdict: All of the products used felt light and calming on my skin, and I left feeling relaxed and refreshed. My skin definitely had a healthy, visible glow when the hour was up, rather than the redness that sometimes occurs right after a facial. It also really helped get rid of a pesky breakout I was experiencing before the treatment. And the best part was that I enjoyed an hour of indulging in red wine without any hangover!
