Red Carpet Trend Report: Two Party-Ready Looks to Try and One Hairstyle to Retire Until Spring

The three ladies in the above photos are all wearing black, but that’s where the similarities end. There’s a reason we’re showing you their pics, though: Each of them represents a red carpet trend — two on the up and up, one losing popularity.

Up: Black lace. Suddenly it seems like everyone (and by everyone, we mean everyone — from a royal mom to a former Cheetah Girl) is wearing this material to formal events. Of those two stars, it was Duchess Catherine who gave us the more demure look — shocker — in a Temperley London dress, but we’re seeing (and predicting a lot more of) really racy, sexy black lace designs, too. And really, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if the Duchess and her always-fashionable sister Pippa Middleton are wearing black lace on the red carpet, the rest of the world can’t be far behind.

Up: Blinged-out Pants. Earlier this month, we correctly predicted that fancy pants (think: tailored silhouettes, lace panels) on the red carpet would only grow in popularity. This week, we’re amending our prediction: Really, really fancy pants boasting sequins, beading, sheer material and even Swarovski crystals are making a serious showing on the carpet. Emmy Rossum attended a gala in a pair of embellished Naeem Khan skinnies so dazzling, we almost wondered if they came with their own bodyguard. And before that, Elizabeth Banks negated the need for jewelry when she hit up a premiere in Aladdin-stye bottoms with crystal racing stripes. Mark our words: You’ll see at least one star during awards season in a pair of sequined, beaded, crystal-adorned or otherwise sparkly pants.

Down: I Dream of Jeannie Ponies. There’s a time and a place to discuss Carmen Electra’s cleavage (that time is now and that place is Obsessed or Hot Mess), but we’re talking about her hair here. It’s not that we don’t love a high ponytail so fierce it can be whipped back and forth. It’s just that we feel the moment for that hairstyle has come and gone. Take a good long look at Carmen in the above photo because that may be the last time you see a pony like that for a while. Until then, expect soft curls, ballerina buns and peekaboo braids.

So, would you try the black lace trend or the blinged-out pants look? Let us know below!
