In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we noticed a ton (and we mean a ton) of open-back gowns, a fresh take on the popular topknot style and one really bad case of layering.
Up: Open-back dresses. Does anyone else want to find some black-tie event to go to, just so they can rock this trend? We could stare at the back of Charlize Theron’s Alexander McQueen gown (worn to the Ferragamo Beverly Hills gala) for at least a few more hours. And the dramatic black design with gold detailing at the shoulders is just as pretty from the front. The actress wasn’t the only star to make a statement from behind. Amy Adams’s lavender Prabal Gurung number at the screening of Her in N.Y.C. had a cool combo of cutouts and paneling, as did Olivia Munn’s chartreuse Michael Kors gown worn to the God’s Love We Deliver event in N.Y.C. Check out the rest (like Allison Williams’s black stunner) here.
Up: Funky topknots. A classic high bun will always be around, but this week stars were experimenting with the chic pulled-back style. The number one topknot remix remix to catch our eye: Freida Pinto’s teased front updo with a messy bun atop her head, worn with a gorgeous beaded blush Ferragamo gown (which also features an open back!) at the brand’s Beverly Hills gala. At the same event, Gwen Stefani also opted for a tricked out topknot featuring a mini twist in front. Sidenote: What other (rumored to be) pregnant woman could pull off a full fringe gown? (That was a rhetorical question.)
Down: Over-layering. Yes, it’s fall and the chilly weather is slowly rolling in. And yes, layering is a timeless look. But we have to admit: We scratched our heads when we saw Elizabeth Olsen in this cozy knit sweater on top of a black knee-length dress (both Chloé) and black shiny pants at a party for Romeo and Juliet in N.Y.C. Not only do wish we could see the rest of the dress, but this look also seemed to be a mess compared to the sleek silhouettes the rest of Hollywood selected this week.
