For many of you, the last time you saw R. Kelly he was most likely trapped in a closet. Or perhaps convincing a ragtag group of cartoons led by Michael Jordan to believe they can fly, if not educating you in the finer arts of jubilantly celebrating the freakin’ weekend. But now the infamous musician has taken on a brand new role, giving all of these Instagram It-Girls a run for their money as the newest star of Alexander Wang‘s Spring/Summer 2017 digital campaign alongside model and brand-favorite Anna Ewers.
The campaign for the designer’s latest collection was shot by famed photographers Inez and Vinoodh in the penthouse of the Old Police Building in downtown Manhattan. According to a press release for the campaign aptly titled, “Beyond Reality,” the images are meant to “blur the lines between fantasy and reality, presenting a unique observation on the superficial with a though-provoking commentary on society’s current obsessions with speculation: did that happen, did it not? What was real and what was fabricated?”
The photos themselves feature R. Kelly wearing an all-black suit with no tie, a striped scarf, and his signature shades all while smoking a cigar and lounging side-by-side with Ewers who wears a big, white fur coat and crystal-covered bucket bag while smoking a cigarette.
The photos were taken during a giant party Wang held in the building on December 7 in collaboration with Beats by Dr. Dre to celebrate the launch of his second headphone collaboration.
In the end, we can’t decide what we’re more excited about, R. Kelly’s promising new career as a burgeoning supermodel, or the additional 4o chapters of his seminal hip-hopera “Trapped in the Closet” that he has assured the public are forthcoming. Only time will tell.
