Queen Latifah on Curvy Barbie: 'This Is Groundbreaking'

Posted on

If you happened to miss Barbie’s big news yesterday (no, she’s not expecting a Ken Jr. yet), here’s a quick recap: Mattel released the new generation of the iconic doll, featuring tall, curvy and petite body types — a first in Barbie’s 57 year history! And even though the star reactions were mixed on Twitter, Queen Latifah thinks the new collection is “incredible.”

“I think this is groundbreaking. Barbie is iconic,” Latifah told People at Barbie’s “Reshape the Conversation” Dinner in L.A. Thursday. “Barbie to me is as about as American as apple pie. To me it’s awesome for today’s young girls to play with a doll and see a little bit more of themselves in Barbie then I did when I was a kid and I think it’s a very exciting thing.”

And she’s excited about the shift in conversation happening with body diversity. “It’s a perfect concept for Barbie to present, reshape the conversation. I mean with all of these dolls looking all of these kind of different ways, different body shapes, different hair, different hair textures, different skin tones, different clothing styles to me just opens up the world to little girls who have their own identity to find a little bit of something that they see in themselves or something they don’t see at all.”

The star is also excited about the SAG Awards Saturday (get prepped by looking at these amazing throwback photos of nominees), where she’s nominated for the Outstanding Female Actor awards.

She spilled that she narrowed down her dress search to two styles.

“One is a Michael Costello gown and it’s beautiful and it’s beaded and the back is sexy and [the other] is a Carmen Marc Valvo gown, which is black and has white piping and it’s really cool,” she shared. “Either way I’m wearing both gowns somewhere because I love them both, but I wore lots of color at the Golden Globes and I felt very comfortable and beautiful, and I think I’ll feel the same the night of the SAG awards on Saturday.” (Click here to see what we think her character Bessie would wear to the show!)

And if you’re wondering what the two-time winner would do if she happens to snag another statue, the answer is simple: She’d incorporate it into her workout routine.

“It’s a very heavy award. It is definitely something when you get bored with dumbbells, you can always pick up your SAG Award,” she quipped. “I pick up my two SAG Awards and I just do some bicep curls. I go, ‘Chicago, Hairspray, Chicago, Hairspray.’ But I wouldn’t mind switching it up with, ‘Chicago, Bessie, Hairspray, Bessie.'”
