With a former career as Miss USA and now a life as a model and on-air host, Olivia Culpo knows all about getting camera-ready. So much so that she often does her own makeup for events. And her gorgeous, thick, ever-changing hair is so landed her a gig as an ambassador for hair giant GHD. Which is why with summer on the horizon, we’re chatting up the star about her hot weather glam tricks.
Below, everything Culpo swears by when the temperatures rise — and what product she steals from her NFL star boyfriend, Danny Amendola.
You’re always experimenting with hair extensions. What’s your favorite length?
At this point in my life, my favorite length would be a ‘lob’ because it’s easy to transition into longer, but you can always get away with it being short and cute, and it’s easy— you can still put it up in a ponytail, but you still get that short, playful look.
What’s the most dramatic hair change you’d go for? Pixie cut? Platinum dye?
I’ve thought about having one of those hair moments, and I probably will eventually. But not platinum just because I’ve never dyed my hair!
How do you handle frizz during the summer?
I embrace it. Your hair can get a little bigger due to the heat, and I like that volume. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is braid my hair before I go to bed and then wake up having a natural wave. Or I just pull it into a bun at the back of my head, which is really easy and it’s just out of my face.
If you could only use one hair product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Coconut oil. It’s so hydrating and you could use it for pulling the hair back. Or anything from Moroccanoil because it smells really good.
What are your must-have summer beauty products?
Definitely my GHD tools because they only go to 365°, which is optimal for hair styling and when I’m getting my hair styled all the time it’s really important to make sure I’m not damaging my hair on top of being in the LA sun. I also use coconut oil mask when I go to bed. It just hydrates the hair and has natural SPF, so it protects it from the heat and the UV rays.
What’s the longest you’ve gone without washing your hair?
Probably over a week. I don’t get greasy hair very easily, but if I do I’ll just wear it in a bun for more days than anybody needs to know.
Do you ever ask for your boyfriend’s opinion on your hair and makeup looks?
All the time. I think that what I’ve come to find with men, in general, is that they always like the natural, undone look. They love when you don’t look like you’re trying too hard because, to them, it’s sexier.
Does Danny ever steal her beauty products — or vice versa?
What I always steal from every boy in my life is hair putty. They always have the best hair putty or hair wax, and it works great for getting away flyaway hairs. Put it on your roots and then just blow-dry it in whatever direction you want. It also helps with the slicked back hair look.
Who takes longer to get ready?
Me—by a lot!
With almost 2 million Instagram followers, how many photos does it take to get the perfect shot?
I would say it takes between 25 and 50 pictures. It’s never about the expression; it’s about the light and the angle.
What’s the secret to looking your best in an Instagram bikini pic?
The time of day. Golden hour (the hour before the sun sets) is the time of day where you’re going to get the best pictures. I would also just say finding the angles and what works best for your body because everybody everybody has certain angles that look good.
Is it possible to take a cute — not cheesy — couples picture?
It’s always cheesy when it’s forced. I’ve never taken a picture where I’ve planned ‘this is going to be really cute!’ It’s always very organic and natural looking.
