Celebs going makeup-free in (carefully lit) Instagram selfies is nothing new, but lately a crop of stars are taking the trend to a whole new level. First, Alicia Keys started a makeup-free movement (she made her barefaced red carpet debut at the BET Awards last month). And now Mila Kunis posed on the August cover of Glamour magazine without a stitch of makeup.
Well, technically she wore skin serum, eye cream and lip balm. But Kunis describes her decision to go barefaced as a simple one — she was just being herself.
“I don’t wear makeup. I don’t wash my hair every day. It’s not something that I associate with myself,” she told the magazine. “I commend women who wake up 30, 40 minutes early to put on eyeliner. I think it’s beautiful. I’m just not that person.”

Overall she felt comfortable in her skin and the safe space created on set. “So to go to a shoot and have my makeup artist put on face cream and send me off to do a photo, I was like, ‘Well, this makes life easy.’ And you’re still protected. Nobody’s there to make you look bad.”

It marked the perfect shoot for Kunis who says she “hates” Photoshop after one eye-opening experience.
“There was a company that I did a photo shoot for once that manipulated the photo so much, I was like, ‘That’s not even me.’ Like, what’s the point? You wanted my name, and then you wanted the version of me that I’m not. I absolutely hate it,” she shared. “Now, do I sometimes want them to depuff my eyes, help me out with a little bit of lighting? [Sure.] But do I want them to stretch my legs, thin out my waist, curve my hips, elongate my neck, blah, blah, blah? No.”
The makeup-free lifestyle also suits Kunis’ busy life as an actress and mom. In June, she and husband Ashton Kutcher announced they’re expecting their second child (daughter Wyatt is 21 months) and Kunis said he’s a natural at fatherhood.
“He’s always doing daddy hacks. He’s so not a passive husband or father. He doesn’t just go, ‘I don’t know’ and throw his hands up in the air. He’s like, ‘We can fix it.'”
She also explained how their relationship is as close as ever. “We can’t bullsh-t each other. I literally can’t lie to him,” she said. “He can call me out on everything, and I can do the same, because there’s nothing about the other person’s face that we don’t know. We know when they’re acting, thus we know when they’re lying.”
