It’s going to be a busy awards season for Margot Robbie, which means tons of red carpet looks. The 27-year-old Australian actress is receiving huge praise for her portrayal of the polarizing pro ice skater Tonya Harding in the film I, Tonya, and it seems the sparkly skater aesthetic has influenced the actress’s off-screen style.
Robbie kicked off the awards show circuit at the the 27th Annual Gotham Awards Monday night, wearing a glittering green Saint Laurent dress featuring a head-turning high slit and one-shoulder neckline. She teamed the look with black ankle-strap sandals and a tiny Roger Vivier “Cigarette Case” bag that probably only fits a tube of her wine-colored lipstick.
“Every time I put something on I’m like, ‘Does it look like I’m trying to dress like an ice skater?’ That means I would have avoid sequins forever and I’m just not willing to do that,” she told PEOPLE of her look for the Gotham Awards.
So be prepared for maximum sequins to come from the star, who works closely with stylist Kate Young on her red carpet wardrobe.
And while she’s playing a famous ’90s figure skater on the big screen screen, Robbie admitted that the decade is inspiring her off-duty style in real life as well.
“It started with scrunchies and then it like kind of spread to the rest of my wardrobe,” she told PEOPLE last month. “All of a sudden I was like, ‘I dress ’90s every day; what is this?’”
Her stylist also famously dressed her in a butterfly Versace dress at the Goodbye Christopher Robin in NYC last month, reminiscent of the same print used in the Italian label’s 1995 collection.
So what’s next from the star? While we doubt she’ll go full Harding and wear a scrunchie and leotard to her next event, there are sure to be some more ’90s-inspired looks to come.
