The 14-year-year old starlet has made the transition from cute child star to chic teen — luckily, without having to suffer through an awkward phase — while developing a signature style that’s both fashion-forward and age-appropriate, thanks in part to fashion icons both past and present. “Well, I love Alexa Chung. But then there’s Grace Kelly, I think she has such beautiful, classic style,” she told PEOPLE during her first trip to New York Fashion Week in 2012. “And Audrey Hepburn as well.”
Another style star Kiernan has looked to for inspiration: Her onscreen mother, played by January Jones. “Occasionally, January and I have talked fashion together, not a lot though,” she told InStyle at the Mad Men season three premiere in 2009. “She always looks great. She’s a real risk-taker.”
While Kiernan still favors Peter Pan-style collars like the one she wore to a Target event in 2008 (far left), she’s graduated into grown-up labels like Oscar de la Renta, Miu Miu and Valentino. At the Mad Men season seven premiere last month, she looked looked perfectly sweet and sophisticated in a floral jacquard mini dress from Nina Ricci (far right).
In 2012, she wore a made-to-measure dress from Zac Posen to the Emmys. “I met up with Zac in New York at his atelier and I told him my ideas of what I wanted it to be,” the actress told InStyle.com of the design process. “He had this whole vision. He’s brilliant.”
Kiernan’s own closet is filled with Stella McCartney, Rag & Bone, Chanel and even a few retro pieces from her Mad Men wardrobe. “I love organization, so I split my clothes into two closets according to seasons. Though I have to go to the guestroom to pull my fall and winter items, it’s still much easier than cramming all my clothes together in my one closet,” a then 11-year-old Kiernan told The Coveteur. “I love space in between hanging clothes.”
She just landed a gorgeous Vanity Fair spread to mark the end of the show, as well as her transition to big-time fashion star. Now that Mad Men is coming to an end, we can’t wait to see where career will take her in the next few years — and what she’ll wear next.
