The only way you could miss Lupita Nyong’o’s colorful red carpet streak is if you’ve been living under a rock the past few weeks. She’s been on a high-fashion roll while promoting her new film, Queen of Katwe, in one gorgeous gown and head wrap after another. So for today’s #TBT post, she threw it back to where her new style inspiration all came from — her wardrobe on set.
The film follows the amazing true story of a 10-year-old Ugandan girl who becomes a chess champion, with Nyong’o playing the role of her mother.
On Thursday the actress posted two photos from her time on set wearing traditional brightly-colored, printed Ugandan dresses known as gomesi, captioning the post, “All things gomesi.”
Throughout the entire press tour (which has been rolling for weeks now) Nyong’o has been paying homage to her character’s roots with similar styles of gowns and head wraps.

“Going with the theme of the movie, they are my crowns,” the actress told PEOPLE about the head wraps she’s worn throughout the tour. “It’s the quintessential African accessory.”
She explained that she works with her stylist Micaela Erlanger and hairstylist Vernon François to source wraps that match her dresses. They either reach out to the designer of the gowns chosen, or find African fabrics either from east Africa or stores in N.Y.C.
“It’s definitely teamwork to make the head wraps,” she said. “Micaela and I like to be inspired by the thing we’re promoting. So we find our own little secrets and sources of inspiration. So, for this film we’re inspired by the character I play.”
The promotional tour may have ended, but we sincerely hope there are many more bold, colorful looks from Nyong’o to come.
