Following her awards season chic streak — with some of the most memorable makeup looks on any red carpet — we figured it was just a matter of time until Lupita Nyong’o landed a big beauty campaign. Well, the moment has arrived: The Oscar-winning actress has just been tapped as the new face of Lancôme, following in the footsteps of Hollywood heavyweights including Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet and Penélope Cruz.
“I am truly honored to join the Maison Lancôme, a brand with such a prestigious history and that I have always loved,” she said in a statement. “I am particularly proud to represent its unique vision for women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself.” Her first campaign will launch this summer, and while we wait for the official unveiling, we looked back at some of the moments that made her such a beauty standout.
Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: I’ve been going through Lupita withdrawal since award season ended. I know she’s out there being amazing and doing her thing, but seeing her on a red carpet every night was such a pick-me-up. So needless to say I shrieked when I heard her big Lancôme news. Then I immediately thought of her makeup look from the LoveGold luncheon back in February. (Yes, this is how my mind works.)
First let’s talk about that liner. That color! The “Sapphire” by Lancôme shade perfectly matched her Stella McCartney dress. Nyong’o’s makeup artist Nick Barose followed a primary colors palette, adding a statement YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in “#1 Le Rouge,” for a look which he touted as “quirky, fun and very Pop Art.” And to get her glow, Barose used Lancôme Blush Subtil in “Aplum.” (I’m hoping to recreate the look for my bachelorette party with the same shades!)
Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: The first time I knew she was going to be one to watch on the red carpet was way back in October, when she wore this awesome cockatoo-print Miu Miu dress with some majorly bold makeup. Many red carpet newbies would shy away from making such a major statement, but not Lupita. She really went for it with a strong lavender-and-plum winged smoky eye and a beautiful orchid lip (NARS “Full Frontal”), and I think she’s definitely encouraged others to be more fearless with their beauty looks.
Andrea Lavinthal, Style Director: If this look could talk, it would say, “Beauty rules are made to be broken.” Lupita ignores the idea that you shouldn’t enhance more than one feature at a time by rocking exaggerated winged liner with electric pink lips (exact shade: Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in “Champagne”), not to mention glowing cheeks and a fun hairstyle. “Elongated liner is a great way to add drama to the eyes,” her makeup artist Nick Barose told InStyle. Not that a girl this gorgeous needs any help drawing attention to her already stunning features.
Alexi Lubomirski for Lancôme
In the first look portrait from her campaign (left), the star sports a more natural makeup look (a stark contrast to the photos above) wearing some shimmery gold shadow and a beautiful nude lip.
“Both talented and committed, true to her African beauty, and showing a great curiosity and open-mindedness in her career choices, Lupita is by essence the Lancôme woman,” Françoise Lehmann, General Manager of Lancôme International, shared in the release. “A strikingly beautiful and intelligent woman, serenely but strongly living her life her own way, Lupita has this special kind of aura, both enlightening and deep.”
