Lupita Nyong'o: 'I Don't Like to Suffer For Fashion!'

If vivid blue eyeshadow makes a comeback, we’ll have no one to blame (or thank?) but Lupita Nyong’o. Since making her mark on the style scene back in October, she’s been dazzling with one bold beauty look after another, wearing everything from outfit-matching eyeshadow to black lipstick with aplomb. In fact, she might be making it look too easy — she’s giving the rest of us ideas about things we probably can’t pull off.

Case in point: the saturated sapphire shadow she wore with a rich red lip to a LoveGold luncheon in her honor Wednesday. Makeup artist Nick Barose chose primary colors for a “quirky, fun and very Pop Art” look thanks to Lancôme Art Liner in “Sapphire.” He prepped her lips with a non-greasy Kiehl’s lip balm to prevent the YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in #1 Le Rouge from fading or feathering, then kept the rest of her look low-key. A wash of Lancôme Blush Subtil in “Aplum” was all she need to “flatter her skin without looking too bright.”

Of course Nyong’o offset her major makeup look with some pretty killer shoes, so we had to ask: Are you a comfort girl or a fashion girl? “Definitely comfort. I don’t like to suffer for fashion,” she told PEOPLE. “I kick off my shoes as soon as I can. That’s definitely the first thing I do. I think you have to figure it out depending on what you’re wearing. Because different dresses come with different challenges.”

And despite all the attention paid to her perpetually on-point fashion choices, Nyong’o has managed to keep any stress at bay by relying on her style team. “Being with my glam squad [is my favorite part of getting ready for an event],” she said. “I really just enjoy that time. We just listen to music and dance sometimes and we crack some jokes and, you know, we get the glam on!”
