We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.
We’ve already covered the amazing updos spotted at the amfAR New York Gala in N.Y.C. Wednesday evening, but there’s one extra-special beauty moment that deserves some additional attention: Adriana Lima’s hair bow-tie! So we chatted with her glam squad — celebrity hairstylist Jennifer Yepez and makeup artist Morgane Martini — for all the exclusive details.
For the star-studded charity event, Lima opted for a beautiful red strapless Marchesa number with a sequin-embellished neckline and bow-tie detailing in the back, which, Yepez says, inspired the supermodel’s beauty look for the night.
“Because the dress had such a beautiful detail in the back, I wanted to enhance it,” she tells PeopleStyle. “I knew the hair had to be up, but I didn’t want it to be in a bun or a ponytail. I remember doing bows like this on the runway many seasons ago, and when I spoke to her stylist we both agreed that the bow would be a great option — we both said it literally at the same time it — it was a perfect fit.”
To get the hair bow-tie style, which took about an hour to execute, Yepez says she began by prepping Lima’s damp hair with Nexxus ProMend Heat Protecting Mist from mid-shaft to the ends, and then rough-dried her hair using a flat brush for a straight, flat style.
Once completely dry, Yepez created a sharp center part with the tail of a comb, spraying Kerastase Laque Couture hairspray into her Lima’s hair to create a sleek, wet look, and then brushed her hair back into a tight ponytail. The hair guru then sectioned the ponytail into two parts, looping one section into a bun-like style and secured it with an elastic. She then repeated the loop process with the other section of hair.

To create the center of the bow, Yepez took a section of hair from the hanging pieces of the style and wrapped it around the visible elastics and pinned them into place. Once the bow was made, she used a flat iron to straighten the two pieces hanging from the bow creating a sleek, chic and clean look. Yepez finished the look off with a good douse of Kerastase K Gloss Appeal for a lacquer-like shine.
Fun fact: If you couldn’t already tell, a hairstyle like this requires a lot of hairspray. Yepez says she used about a half of can of Kerastase Laque Couture to hold the bow in place. “The bow did take a lot of hairspray, but it’s always good to use a strong-hold hairspray [for a style like this], that way you don’t spend too much time,” she says.

As for Lima’s makeup, Martini decided to play up the star’s eyes, opting for a super-sexy smoky eye, which she paired with a nude lip.
“We were in a red lip moment the past few days, so I decided to [change it up] and give a shoutout to her gorgeous eyes,” Martini tells PeopleStyle. “I always love a red lip, but I thought that it was too obvious to go matchy-matchy with her dress. This bright red dress was already a statement in itself, so I decided to be more subtle with the makeup and only focus on her amazing blue eyes.”
So to get the smoky eye, Martini first covered Lima’s eyelids with Maybelline Eyestudio Color Tattoo Concentrated Crayon in Grey Crystal for the smoky base, and then blended three shades from the Maybelline New York The Rock Nudes Palette to add depth and highlight.
“I used the light shimmery white-pink [shade] on the inside corner and brow bone, then the glittery black [hue] in the center and the matte black on the outside and bottom lashes,” she explains. Martini then amped up Lima’s lashes with Maybelline New York The Falsies Push Up Drama Mascara in Blackest Black.
For the finishing touch, Martini gave Lima’s lips a burst of hydration with Maybelline New York Baby Lips Lip Balm and then lightly dabbed on a touch of Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipcolor in Daringly Nude for a “subtle and soft” look.
As for the final look, Yepez says it was a hit. “Once [Adriana] saw it, she said, ‘Oh my God, I love it!’,” Yepez tells PeopleStyle. “[She] was so happy with the outcome, and honestly I cannot imagine anything better than the final look — hair and makeup was perfect that night.”
