Look Like a Pretty Little Liar with Drybar's Bouncy Blowouts

Posted on

We’ve got a beauty secret, and we seriously can’t keep it.

In honor of
Pretty Little Liars
‘ much anticipAted winter premiere (plus a five-year time jump), Freeform is offering fans free blowouts — based on each of the super stylish main characters — at the more than 50 Drybar locations across the nation.

“The ladies of PLL always have beautiful hair that our clients can really relate to,” Drybar founder Alli Webb tells PEOPLE. “It’s such a perfect collaboration — so many of our clients are big fans of the show!”

Appointments booked up almost immediately, but don’t have a Mona meltdown: Some lucky People staffers got a sneak peek with a special glam session Monday night, and we tried each blowout for you. Plus, Webb shared some tips for how to achieve the looks at home.

Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform, the new ABC Family.

THE HANNA DIRTY MARTINI (Kelli Bender, pets editor/producer)

Style evolution: Hanna (Ashley Benson) is a fashion assistant in the flash-forward, so you can bet her medium-length blonde hair with face frames and beachy waves is totally on trend.

Model’s take: “The whole experience smelled fantastic and felt even better — I am pretty sure my stylist and I had a psychic bond. As a result, I ended up with a Hanna-style blowout that made me feel ready to sit for a large-scale oil painting or sleuth around for clues on who killed my best friend (if she is really dead). Why not both!”

Alli’s tips: “Start with adding Mai Tai Sea Salt Spray on damp hair then rough dry. Build some movement and a little wave into your hair using the Full Pint Medium Round Brush, followed by the 3-Day Bender. The trick is to only have it in your hair for a second and then stretch the waves with your fingertips to create a super loose wave. Spray Triple Sec into the hair from underneath, massage and scrunch strands for a perfectly messy look!”

THE ARIA STRAIGHT UP (Rose Minutaglio, human interest editorial assistant)

Style evolution: Book editor Aria (Lucy Hale) has a new boyfriend (sorry, Ezria shippers) and a shorter but still straight and sleek ‘do with ombre highlights — edgy, but less risky than that pink streak.

Model’s take: “I just cut my hair shoulder-length and have been trying to figure out how to style it – I love the chicness of Aria’s look!”

Alli’s tips: “Prep damp hair with Velvet Hammer Hydrating Control Cream and 100 Proof Treatment Oil. Blow out hair in small sections using a large round brush and add curl to the ends with the 3-Day Bender Curling Iron. Smooth the ends with The Chaser Shine Cream and finish with Money Maker Flexible Hold Hairspray.”

THE ALISON COSMO-TAI (Michele Corriston, TV associate editor)

Style evolution: As a hot, young English teacher, Ali (Sasha Pieterse) is basically the female version of Mr. Fitz five years later — and she’s grown her golden curls out in all their mermaid-y glory.

Model’s take: “I came in looking like I’d been on the lam — without a curling iron — after faking my own death and left Drybar feeling like Rosewood High’s resident mean girl at her bounciest best. My hair is shiny, soft and wavy without the frizz, so I’m giving this look an A-plus (get it?!).”

Alli’s tips: “Apply Hot Toddy Heat Protector to damp hair, comb through with the Lemon Drop Detangling Brush, and then rough dry. Section hair and blowout each section with a Full Pint Medium Round Brush, held vertically to create curl. Insert High Tops Self Grip Rollers to the crown for added volume and finish with some extra curl using the 3-Day Bender. Spray Sparkling Soda Shine Mist to enhance this style.”

THE EMILY SOUTHERN COMFORT (Maria Yagoda, features writer-reporter)

PLL

Style evolution: Emily (Shay Mitchell) is struggling with the death of her beloved dad, but she’s still rocking long, thick, princessy tresses.

PLL

Model’s take: “I loved how sleek and shiny the look was; it made me feel very sexual, like I was ready to seduce a very important person. I got the Emily blowout because I think Shay Mitchell is a perfect specimen. The look was polished without being too dressy. It’s safe to say I won’t be showering for the next few weeks — I want this look to last.”

Alli’s tips: “Start with Hot Toddy Heat Protector and Southern Comfort Volumizing Mousse on damp hair and comb through with the Lemon Drop Detangling Brush. Rough dry, section hair, and blowout each section with a Full Pint Medium Round Brush. Insert High Tops Self Grip Rollers at the crown for added volume and set hair with Money Maker Flexible Hold Hairspray.”

THE SPENCER MAI TAI (Tara Fowler, crime staff editor)

PLL

Style evolution: In 2016, brainy Spencer (Troian Bellisario) is a Georgetown graduate pursuing politics in Washington, D.C.,  and she’s added bangs that would give Olivia Pope major hair envy to her brown, wavy tresses.

PLL
Michael Calcagno/People.com

Model’s take: “My stylist managed to do what few others have done and gave me the absolute perfect swoop-y bang. My hair stays out of my eyes, but isn’t plastered to my forehead. Also, she didn’t make fun of me when I accidentally dipped it in the free champagne.”

PLL
Michael Calcagno/People.com

Alli’s tips: “Spritz Mai Tai Sea Salt Spray on damp hair, rough dry, then curl random sections with the 3-Day Bender Curling Iron. For a messy, undone look, curl sections vertically and alternate forward and backward curls.”

Are you a PLL fan?
Of course! I’m so anxious to see what happens in the winter premiere! I’m personally drawn to Hanna  as she has such a kind and generous heart but isn’t afraid to fiercely defend her girls. I moved to N.Y.C. in my 20s, too, so I’m so excited to see her adventures there unfold!

Did you expect the premiere blowouts to book as quickly as they did?
We had a feeling it would be pretty popular based on the huge following Pretty Little Liars has and how much our clients love blowouts.  All appointments across all shops in the U.S. booked up in just a few hours after our initial announcement — it was definitely a “pinch me” moment for all of us!

Drybar

Which of the five do you think is the easiest to master?
The Cosmo and Mai Tai are fairly easy to execute with texturing products (like Triple Sec) and the 3-Day Bender curling iron.

Which is the quickest for someone to do in the morning if she’s in a rush?
The Mai Tai! Spray in some Mai Tai Spritzer, rough-dry, then curl random sections with the 3-Day Bender, some curls going forward, some going back.

Everyone looks their best with a fresh blowout, but how long do you recommend clients should actually go before washing their hair again?
It all depends on your hair type and natural texture, plus your personal schedule post-blowout: Balancing fitting in a spin class or a Pilates workout, traveling for business, or battling the weather. You should be able to make a Drybar blowout last anywhere from 2-5 days.

Do you have any tips for clients to make their blowouts last longer?
I recommend picking up a Morning After Shower Cap (if you don’t have one already) to use when you shower in between blowouts. To prolong your blowout, use Detox Dry Shampoo at your roots, then refresh body and add texture with Triple Sec 3-in-1. You can also add in a little extra shine and smooth those flyaways with Sparking Soda Shine Mist.
