Lauren Conrad's Purple Hair: April Fools' Prank or the Real Deal?

Lauren Conrad has been in a jokey mood lately. (Remember her recent experiment with the Frida Kahlo-style unibrow?) So we weren’t sure if her latest beauty move — purple hair! — was real or an April Fools’ prank.

Conrad posted a photo on her blog Monday debuting a lavender wash all throughout her hair. Our first thought: This is a bold move for someone who is planning her wedding. Our second thought: It’s not her first foray into bold hair color, so maybe it’s real?

“As I’ve mentioned before, I keep temporary pink hair dye in my shower for whenever I’m in the mood for a fun beauty look,” she wrote. “Sometimes on a Friday I’ll work some pink dye into my mane and enjoy pink-tipped tresses until Monday when I wash my hair again. It’s a fun off-duty look for the weekend.”

She also explained that she used semi-permanent color, which according to Conrad, “stays in for 6 to 8 weeks before washing out.” Her hairstylist Kristen Ess teased the above photo on Instagram, showing what look to be her gloved hands covered in lilac dye, more proof that the star actually took the plunge (or else she pays great attention to detail when planning her pranks). Turns out the latter is true. Both Conrad and Ess were in on it together. It’s a total joke.

“To get this exact shade of purple, we went out and gathered rare amethyst stones. Next, we ground them up by hand until they turned into a fine powder. Then we added 2 pinches of grape koolaid. Mix that in a bowl with 2 oz. of mermaid tears. Apply all over and let it sit for 16 hours. Lather, rinse, repeat. #aprilfoolsyall #shedoesntevenlikepurple,” Ess captioned the below photo, revealing their stunt.

Conrad was so dedicated to the prank that she said in the blog post that she was inspired by other stars (Nicole Richie, perhaps?) who recently changed up their locks looks with a pastel hue, making it more believable.

“I really didn’t think that purple was my color, but after seeing several others wear it recently, I decided to give it a try,” Conrad added. “I also tested out the dye on a small section of hair underneath, before coloring my whole mane — which I always recommend. It just goes to show that you should never knock a trend until you try it …”

We think Conrad totally pulls it off, so we’re a bit bummed it’s just a joke. How about you: Are you a fan of Conrad’s pastel shade? Do you think she should do it for real? Share your thoughts below.
