Lady Gaga: You Can’t Make Music with a Lobster on Your Head (Foils Are a Different Story)

Lady Gaga

A few years ago, spotting Lady Gaga in jeans and a T-shirt would be an anomaly nearly as rare as seeing Kim Kardashian without spandex or Adele without her signature cat eye. Her version of “everyday attire” was a meat dress. But lately, she’s been hitting the streets in items as quotidian as concert tees and jean shorts, and in a recent interview with The London Times’ Culture magazine, she finally explains why.

“To be frank, I would just prefer to go through this album cycle and talk about my music, Gaga tells The London TimesCulture magazine. That’d be great. It becomes about everything else, and that was what I [once] wanted. But if I wear a black T-shirt and black pants every day, [people] might listen to what I write. All the outfits, fashion and art pieces over the years made sense to me. They didn’t make sense to other people. But I always got it. It was an expression, not a hiding.”

And she’s going so far with her new look that she’s even packing away her giant platform heels in hopes of keeping fans focused on her music — not her wild looks. “To be frank, I would prefer to go through this album cycle and talk about my music,” she says. “If I wear black pants and a black T-shirt everyday, people might focus on what I write. All the outfits, fashion and art pieces over the years made sense to me [but] they didn’t make sense to other people.”

She says that the evolution happened naturally, starting with her time spent working on Joanne. “This time, my style just stayed naturally at how I’ve been in the studio,” Gaga says. “I started vehemently saying, ‘Get these clothes out! I’m not wearing this! I’m not wearing heels!’ And some of that, too, is because I’ve been in the studio with boys. You can’t make music with a bunch of boys who are staring at a lobster on your head. They are going to get distracted.”

One thing you can expect to remain the same, though, is her platinum hair. She may not be able to make music with a lobster on her head anymore, but she proves she is an expert at multitasking through a full head of foils.
