We so rarely see naturally curly hair on the red carpet that anytime a celeb ventures the texture, we sit up and take notice. And when the curls are as glossy and gorgeous as Kerry Washington’s, we call her stylist to get his secrets.
Celeb superstylist Mark Townsend was responsible for the star’s voluminous but in-control coif. We asked him what inspired the star’s luxe locks — and how we can get the look ourselves.
“I’m so tired of the cold and ready for spring, and the color of Kerry’s amazing Calvin Klein dress was so inspired that we immediately knew the look we wanted to do,” Townsend tells PEOPLE. “I created those curls with a 1/2-in. curling iron by taking 2-to-3-in. sections of hair and wrapping the hair around the barrel of the iron from root to tip.”
For those blessed with naturally curly hair, we recommend a smoothing cream or serum applied to wet hair before drying. For straight hair, add a little texture via mousse or dry shampoo to help the curl hold. We love how formal Townsend made a traditionally casual hairstyle look — though part of that may be the radiant pregnant movie star underneath the style.
