We’ve never seen a perfume ad quite like this.
Spike Jonze lent his directing chops to French luxury brand Kenzo for its perfume, KENZO World. And the results included dancing, lasers and even a fist fight.
The video – which Kenzo officials called an “electric film” – begins like any other perfume ads, with men and women dressed in fancy suits and dresses. But soon, a young woman (played by actress and dancer Margaret Qualley, also known as Andie McDowell’s daughter) leaves the luxurious ballroom and takes to the hallway.
Dressed in an emerald green dress, The Leftovers star then launches into a bout of funny faces and maniacal dancing.
The nearly four-minute video sees the star strutting through the halls of the building shooting laser beams from her finger tips, licking a bust and even taking down a security guard – with her killer dance moves, of course.
She let’s loose to the tune of “Mutant Brain” by Ape Drums and Sam Spiegel – Jonze’s brother. And the woman ends her performance with a leap through a giant eyeball made up of flowers.
“When we think about perfume campaigns, we think about a pretty girl with a bottle. This clip is exactly the opposite,” Qualley told The Hollywood Reporter about the ad. “It’s very multi-faceted and different; it takes the spectator by surprise.”
The video is similar to the Jonze-directed music video for Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice.”
The ad quickly caught the attention of the Twittersphere, with many taking to the social media sight to share their opinions about the video.
The video has already gotten the Giphy treatment, too, with mini-clips of Qualley’s dancing popping up all over the internet.
