Julie Bowen Wants to Shave Her Head - But She Knows It's Not Going to End Well

With a starring role on a hit television show that regularly wins her awards, as well as a loving husband and three precocious boys at home, Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen seemingly has it all.

So it’s only natural that she wants more. It’s what, exactly, Bowen wants that’s the head-scratcher … or do we mean the head-shaver?

“I would like to shave my head,” the actress tells PEOPLE while attending the 2nd Annual Baby2Baby Gala presented by Porsche. “I would love to get some crazy-ass role that required me to dye and shave my head beforehand so that I could actually do it once; so that I would not be ‘the blonde’.”

While being “the blonde” has served her exceedingly well in her career, Bowen would love to find out how freeing a cueball cut would be — though she admits that she is not suffering from any delusions as to how she would look sans hair.

“I know that I’m not going to shave my head and suddenly discover that I’m Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta,” she deadpans. “She shaved her head and it was like, ‘Oh my God, you got prettier?!’ I know that it’s not going to go that way, and that there’s probably some awkward divot on the side of my skull, but honestly it’s the ballsy [stuff] that I should have done in my twenties that I want to do now.”

Though there may be a long line of producers and agents standing between Bowen and a pair of shears, the 43-year-old beauty can focus on her growing bucket list, which she can conveniently disguise as her husband’s birthday list.

“My husband’s birthday is coming up and I’m using it as an opportunity to examine all of the things that I would like to do,” Bowen freely admits. “He loves a couch and Netflix, and God bless it, so do I, but for his birthday I’m like, ‘There’s para-gliding, there’s skydiving, there’s racecar school, or skateboard lessons!'”

Maybe it’s not the Gift of the Magi, but it is the gift that keeps on giving — for her anyway. “That’s the beauty of the birthday,” Bowen says. “He has to accept it. It is a gift from me, but it’s a gift for both of us. On my birthday he can give me more Netflix if he wants.”
