Happy 32nd birthday to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge! She’s already got her pick of royal jewels, a handsome, smart husband, a super-adorable baby and the world’s shiniest hair, but we thought we’d give her one other gift: A Throwback Thursday-themed roundup of our favorite style moments from her 31st year, in the great tradition of Instagram. Check out our favorite Kate moments — and why we loved them — below.
Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: Every time Kate steps out on the red carpet, there’s a collective gasp from editors. First, we fawn over her hair, and then we talk about her clothes. She hit a high note in both those departments for her first post-baby George outing at the Tusk Conservation Awards in London. Her sequin Jenny Packham gown lit up the carpet (and set off fireworks in the PeopleStyleWatch.com office), and you know Prince William was one proud husband. Come on. Look at his gaze in this photo. Perfection.
John Soper, Editorial Assistant: I love the Duchess of Cambridge because she is simply the master at rewearing her best dresses. One of my favorites this year was the white Roland Mouret gown she wore to the Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom screening. She had previously worn the dress to the Thirty Club dinner last year but glammed it up for the red carpet with a Zara necklace that cost a whopping $35. And don’t even bother — I already tried finding the necklace online so I could wear it to the office. SOLD OUT. (Kidding! Well, not about the sold out part. That happened in minutes.)
Whitney Little, Associate Producer:The Duchess’s maternity style was basically a parade of one great look after another, but this outfit stood out for the simple reason that it was just so pretty. I’m obsessed with the fact that she kept all her pieces in the same color family, and the peach Tara Jarmon coat is elegant without being boring. Plus, the rosy shades complemented Kate’s skin tone so well, it’s basically like she was saying, “What morning sickness?” Add this to the list of reasons we believe she may be superhuman.
Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: Less than three months after having Prince George, Kate was back in her favorite J Brands for a game of volleyball. I can’t even get back into my skinny jeans this fast after Christmas. But as truly astounding as her post-baby slimdown was, I loved this look for a few other reasons: First, that she’s never afraid to get down and have fun — even in sky-high wedges. And second, because she (like the rest of us) clearly has a look she’s comfortable in, and isn’t afraid to wear it again and again.
