International Women’s Day has been drawing attention to gender inequality for more than a century, and the cause resonates on every level, both national and global. And some of our favorite fashion brands are contributing to the conversation today, raising money for and drawing attention to causes centered around some very cool women. Read on to see how they’re making an impact today (and beyond).
•For the seventh year in a row, designer Diane von Furstenberg is hosting the DVF Awards. Today, she opens up voting for the People’s Voice Awards, letting fans choose who will be recognized by von Furstenberg’s foundation for the work she does to empower women. The choices are as follows:
Jessica Ladd: She is the founder and CEO of Sexual Health Innovation, a program that helps bring technology for sexual health awareness to women.
Emily Greener: She founded I AM THAT GIRL to help young girls transform self-doubt into self-love.
Fraidy Reiss: She is the founder and executive director of Unchained At Last, a nonprofit dedicated to helping young women leave and/or avoid arranged and/or forced marriages.
Samantha Nutt: She is a medical doctor and the founder and executive director of War Child Canada, where she helps children in war-affected communities reclaim their childhood.
•TOMS, the accessories company that has long practiced one-for-one giving (for every pair of shoes sold, for instance, another pair is given to a needy child), expanded its mission to include delivering items to ensure safe births for mothers and babies in need for every handbag sold. (They also helped provide education to girls in difficult circumstances through a collaboration with Malala Yousafzai earlier this year.)
•Designer shopping destination StyleBop.com is partnering with global social impact campaign One Million Sisters to “draw awareness for women’s social and economic empowerment around the world,” according to a statement. In honor of the partnership, OMS tapped designer Manu Atelier to create a bracelet to represent “true sisterhood.” Each piece retails for $80 and all proceeds from the sales will benefit non-government, female-centric organizations such as Pro Mujer, Every Mother Counts and Care International.
•Everyone’s favorite charm bracelet brand, Alex and Ani, is launching its Kindred Cord Daisy collection to support the educational program, Let Girls Learn, an initiative founded by First Lady Michelle Obama and the Peace Corps to help provide education to girls in underprivileged areas. Twenty percent of each $21 bracelet will be donated to the organization to help implement easier access to learning for girls across the globe.

•Amazon Launchpad will feature women-focused businesses on its startup-centric platforms all day today, including Caliber Collection, a line started by Jessica Mindich; her brand Jewelry for a Cause sources illegal and unwanted guns and related materials from cities like Newark and Detroit, and turns them into bangles, bracelets, cuffs and more.
•Lingerie line Empowered by You is capitalizing on the day’s women-empowerment message to remind consumers to shop consciously; they reinvest 20 percent of proceeds into microloans for women business owners in developing countries, allowing the womens’ business to grow along with the success of the brand’s.
•And because any fashion girl worth her Ferragamos loves a good glass of Champagne, we love Veuve Clicquot’s homage to its entrepreneurial guiding light, Madame Clicquot (who ran her husband’s wine business after becoming a widow at 27), with a series of stylish and modern films all about celebrating for any good reason (they’re all good reasons).
