We know, we know, you haven’t been able to stop thinking about Hilary Duff’s Hilary Duff debuted a brand-new do — a lilac-hued choppy bob since its debut last week. Why did she do it? How did she do it? Did her son like it? She answered all that (and more!) on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today.

“You know what? We just got finished filming the second season of Younger,” Duff told DeGeneres of the inspiration for the chop. “My hair was so long, I just whacked it off. And I’m also a bit of an Instagram troller, so I just find these crazy colors and I’m like, ‘I wanna do that! I want to be a part of that! I want to be cool!'”
And in an effort to be ‘cool,’ Duff she always consults her No. 1 mane man before any major dye job: her four-year-old son, Luca. He loved her green hair makeover, but wasn’t all that pleased with the ‘purple-ish-pink’ shade this time around.
“When I told him I was doing it, he was like, ‘Okay…’ But when I came home, he was like, ‘Well, why is it not rainbow?’,” she says. “He was mad I didn’t have full rainbow hair. I was like, ‘This took five hours, okay?'”
She added: “He’s obsessed with rainbows right now. And when I told him, he was like, ‘I like it, but oh, it’s not rainbow.’ And I was like, ‘Uh, I just disappointed my four-year-old with my hair color.”
“You know what? He’s not such a risk-taker like that,” she said. “I asked him if he wanted to.”

She may be back to blonde before long, though — when DeGeneres asked if the unicorn-esque shade was high-maintenance, Duff was emphatic: “Yes! Girl, yes! No, I have to bleach my whole hair, head? Is that good English? … And then they put the pink and purple on top. It’s quite the process. You know how these things go.”
