CHARMED, SHE'S SURE
Duff, at the L.A. premiere of A Cinderella Story on July 10, sees her life as “kind of like a fairy tale. I’m just 16 years old and I get to travel the world. I have so many fans that support me. I get to do what I love to do.”

“My sister and I have been best friends our whole lives,” says Haylie Duff, 19 (in New York in 2003). They teamed up to remake the ’80s classic “Our Lips Are Sealed” for the Cinderella Story soundtrack and are taking their sister act on the road: Haylie will open for Hilary on her Most Wanted tour, which opens July 20 and continues through the fall.

“I feel really connected to acting,” says the former Lizzie McGuire star (taking a spin in June courtesy of her bodyguard on the New York set of her upcoming comedy The Perfect Man). “You feel so accomplished when you finish a movie.” Also in the works: the drama Raise Your Voice, in which Duff plays a teen who aspires to be a performer.

The Houston native was first inspired to sing while watching her sister rehearse with her band. Now a platinum-selling artist herself (with her 2003 debut CD Metamorphosis), Duff says of performing her music (in Los Angeles in February): “All of these people knowing every single word to my songs and holding up signs at a sold-out venue, that’s so exciting.” Duff will release her second album on Sept. 28, her 17th birthday.

The teen queen, who’s dated pop singer Aaron Carter and actor Jordy Masterson, stirred up the rumor mill when she was seen with Good Charlotte lead singer Joel Madden (who’s 25) in Toronto in late June. Though their reps insisted they are “just friends,” a source spotted the duo smooching in the VIP lounge at the MuchMusic Video Awards in July.

Duff (on L.A.’s Melrose Avenue with pals in April) says “shoes and makeup” are her weakness: “I’m a total junkie.” Another must-have: Bio Ionic’s Micro Hydration Therapy line of hair products. For clothes, her favorite Los Angeles-area boutiques include Belle Gray, Tryst and Dari.

One of Duff’s passions is working with Kids with a Cause, a charity organization in which young celebrities donate their time to help underprivileged and sick children. Duff (at a Kids event in Toronto in March) says giving back is important, because “I think I’m very, very lucky.”

MOTHER KNOWS BEST
Duff lives with her mom, Susan (in 2003), in L.A., while dad Bob, a partner in a chain of convenience stores, visits from Houston every few weeks. “Hilary’s just like every other child,” says Susan. “The best grounding in the world is to give her chores and make her accountable.” Among her household duties: doing the dishes and cleaning the pool.

The petite star (she’s 5’1”) got to put her surfing lessons to good use when she filmed a promotional music video in Maui in January 2003. “I love flying (to) different places and seeing the world and meeting new people,” says Duff of her jet-setting lifestyle.

“We take dogs in all the time in my house,” says sister Haylie. Hilary (with pups at a Much Love Animal Rescue event in Beverly Hills in April) and her family have two dogs: a Chihuahua named Little Dog in L.A. and a border collie named Remington in Houston.

Despite the glaring focus on body image in Hollywood, Duff (chowing on potato chips in L.A. in 2003) insists she’s comfortable with herself: “I don’t listen to what other people say. I don’t care if someone doesn’t think that I’m skinny enough or look okay,” she says. “I like food too much.”

Duff (at the Grammys in February) considers herself a fashion chameleon. “Some days I’ll feel really girlie and I’ll wear a little dress or something. And some days I want to be tougher and I’ll wear a belt with a chain and jeans, or heels.” Her fashion idol? “I love Jennifer Lopez. I would totally love to raid her closet.”

Duff launched Stuff by Hilary Duff, her own line of clothing, shoes and cosmetics, earlier this year. “The cool thing about my line is that everything comes with an accessory,” says Duff (touting her wares at a West Hollywood Target store in March). Mom Susan says her daughter is intimately involved in the design process: “She’s great at that stuff. It’s just an innate ability.”

TOP OF THE WORLD
“She has that personality that seems so approachable, and I think that’s why she has such a huge following,” says A Cinderella Story costar Regina King of Duff (performing in Universal City, Calif., in January). “I don’t know what the future holds,” says Duff. “But I hope I can do the same things I’ve been doing.”
