It’s hard to believe, but the Designer Formerly Known as Posh Spice — the one and only Victoria Beckham — is turning 40 today. And in honor of one of our favorite fashionistas, we decided to revisit some truly noteworthy times in her life. From her early days as a Spice Girl to her current days as a big-deal designer, she’s had one memorable look after another. Below, check out five of our favorites (and be sure to wish her a happy birthday in the comments, since we’re sure she’s reading!)
Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: Listen, I think what Victoria Beckham has done with her career is nothing short of magical. She’s gone from truly tacky WAG to sleek, polished and professional fashion guru with zillions of famous fans. But I will always have a soft spot for her pinnacle-of-’90s-fashion moments as Posh Spice, like her teeny-tiny LBD with the spiral sandals and matching spiral arm band (???) that she wore to the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards (I assume they were nominated for this gem — seriously, watch that if you haven’t in a while).
Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: Everyone still talks about Brit and Justin’s matching denim duds, but I feel like Posh and Becks’s all-white red carpet statement — from the 2003 MTV Movie Awards — does not get enough praise. So I’m bringing it back in honor of the designer’s big birthday. Let’s start with her satin sequin Dolce & Gabbana corset dress. From the lace-up front and spaghetti straps to that slit, it’s truly one of the most memorable fashion moments of the early aughts. David matched his wife (they married in 1999!) in a suit also by the designers, accessorized with large crosses and a half-pony. Some might think the couple looks like a cheesy bridal ad, but all I see is golden tans and great hair. All that’s left to say is, you’re welcome.
Sarah Kinonen, Freelance Beauty Assistant: Although I much prefer “Posh” to Victoria Beckham due to my decade-long obsession with the Spice Girls, I have to admit that Beckham has morphed into quite the fashion mogul over the years. And for that, I love her even more. When it comes to my personal style, I often opt for darker, neutral pieces for a chicer look, which seems to be true for Beckham as well. Because Beckham tends to stick to what she knows (think: a black or blue form-fitting dress with an over-sized bag), I will forever be in love with this pink shift dress from her own line. With her nude heels and glittery bracelet, the outfit perfectly comes together for a perfectly polished feminine look.
Michelle Tan, Senior Editor: Oh, the Posh Barbie phase. When the Beckhams invaded America, no one doubted that VB would bring her fashion A-game to Hollywood. But when she marched onto the soccer field to support David during his first game for the L.A. Galaxy, it was clear Beckham was simply not of this planet. Looking like Elle Woods’s sophisticated older sister, Beckham strutted out in a bubble-gum pink Roland Mouret shift with a matching Hermès Birkin bag (of course!), making every soccer mom question her choice of black yoga pants and cozy sweater. And our guess is that her Balenciaga heels didn’t even sink into the grass as she made her way to her way across the field. She’s that good.
John Soper, Editorial Assistant: It’s hard not to love this look when the outfit in question is covered in hearts! Victoria rocked the 2008 CFDA Fashion Awards red carpet in this Marc Jacobs mini while accompanying the designer for his big night. I’m usually not a huge fan of dresses with giant shoulder ruffles (see Paula Patton’s voluminous design from this year’s Golden Globes), but the sheer fabric, satin belt and Posh’s serious smize make this an ensemble that is hard to forget. (Unfortunately Marc did not win the award in his category that night — but at least he had one of the hottest dates there.)
