First comes the critical acclaim from the music industry, then comes the hit singles (“Flesh without Blood,” “Entropy”) — but you know you’ve really made it when you become an arbiter of all things beauty and style. And that’s where Grimes is right now. She just landed her first beauty campaign for Stella McCartney’s new fragrance, POP, this week and now she’s covering April’s Teen Vogue.
Grimes sat down with McCartney (a self-described “fangirl”) for the accompanying interview, in which she gets quite candid about her beauty routine, the tattoo she regrets and why her signature style is so important to her.

And when we say candid, we mean it. Grimes has been in the unofficial Miley Cyrus body hair club until recently — and she explained why she left. “I just started shaving for the first time this year,” the singer revealed. “I am rebelling against my previous body hair, because now people get mad when I shave my legs. So I’m like, ‘I have the right to shave my legs.’ I think people policing my body either way is bizarre.”
Then the conversation turned to other cosmetic things, namely, tattoos She just got a large cross on her forearm in an effort to “cover up a really bad tattoo that I got when I was younger,” she said. “I’m not religious, but I grew up religious, so it’s a comforting image to me.”

Not every tattoo has a thoughtful backstory — just check her “beautiful” tattoo. “I never decide until 10 minutes before I’m getting a tattoo what it’s going to be. I was in New Zealand playing a show, and this guy said, ‘I’ll give you a free tattoo if I can come to your show.'”

“If you’re performing, the way you dress, even if it’s just a shirt and pants, is a statement in itself whether you like it or not,” she says. “I see fashion as a positive thing. I see it as a way to enhance the project, or as a whole other aspect that I can play with and use to my advantage. Though I make sure that I look like trash about 20 percent of the time so no one’s ever saying, ‘That’s what she looks like without makeup.’ It’s like, ‘Everyone knows.'”
Next on the docket for Grimes is a tour alongside Florence + the Machine, though as glamorous as that may sound, it’s not as elegant as you may think. “When I’m touring I live out of a single suitcase. It’s arduous, and it can be stressful if everything is dirty. I have performed in things that I have slept in.”
Ah, the life of a rock star!
