The holidays can be a trying time. From the stress of gathering together family and friends from near and far, to cooking a casual 10-course dinner before 2:00 p.m., it can wear on even the most zen person. And even under the best of circumstances, keeping the peace over the dinner table can feel like a monumental feat of willpower, let alone in this current political climate. Thankfully, the day after Thanksgiving, there is one thing we can all gather around and agree upon, and that’s the reboot of Gilmore Girls. But if you noticed one particularly peculiar moment in the show’s trailer featuring Emily Gilmore, you’re not the only one.
In the trailer for the show’s new revamp, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life debuting on Netflix on November 25, everyone’s favorite prim and proper Connecticut grandmother, Emily Gilmore, is revealed to be quite the casual Fridays fan. While the matriarch typically looks like she just sashayed off the Chanel runway in her tweed skirt suits and layers of pearls, in this short clip she is featured wearing a decidedly dressed-down pair of jeans and a sweatshirt (see for yourself at 1:20 below!).
And the actress who plays her, Kelly Bishop, told People she was just as surprised as the rest of us when she saw that her character would finally be letting her hair down, saying, “I just saw the trailer yesterday and I went, ‘Really? They’re putting that in?’ Because that is such a surprise.”
She continued, ‘I can’t honestly tell you why it happens, it becomes very evident in the scene…There’s a really specific reason why I am dressed like that, but I don’t want to spoil it. There’s a lot of pop culture there. So you will get the why of it. But I was surprised they didn’t save it for the show, because it will take people back. People were telling me when we were shooting the show that … so many people whether it was wardrobe or the cast, everybody kept saying, ‘I can hardly wait to see Emily in jeans.’ And I went ‘Wow. Okay.’”

But in the end, Bishop wound up becoming a big fan of the choice to get Emily out of her sartorial comfort zone. “I thought this was great. I thought ‘I’m going to be really comfortable’ because I live in jeans all the time and this is a really familiar place for me,” she said. “It’s funny, very funny. The cast knew it was coming, but the one thing I did ask [creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino]: I just wanted one piece of jewelry that was completely inappropriate, and that’s why Emily wore that necklace and had the jeans on.” Until she fires a servant, we won’t believe it’s really her.
