While it may have been doubted by some when she first burst on to the fashion scene, at this point there can be no argument that Gigi Hadid is a bonafide supermodel. After all, this is a girl who doesn’t just land the cover of Vogue, she lands the back cover, the inside cover, and just about every page in between. In fact, it seems there’s no magazine or catwalk the twenty-one year old hasn’t conquered. Unsurprisingly, fans were outraged, however, to hear Tommy Hilfiger discuss dressing Gigi in a poncho for her first show because she wasn’t “quite as thin” as the other girls. But the model has come to the defense of her fashion collaborator, clearing a few things up about that particular quote.
Last week, Hilfiger talked to Yahoo Style’s Joe Zee about Gigi’s first runway show for the brand in February 2015. “Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin’,” he said. “So they put a red, white and blue poncho on her. It covered a lot of her body, unfortunately, but it received millions of hits.” And out of that a fashion line collaboration between the designer and his model muse was born.
Understandably, many took offense to Hilfiger’s remarks about her weight, leading the designer to release a statement attempting to clear up what he meant. But among those note offended was Hadid herself. When asked on Access Hollywood about the quote, the model said, “I know that when Tommy said it last week, it was in context of a larger story that wasn’t shown in that video. I know that the point of that story was that Tommy was rooting for me, and that regardless of what the stylist of that season said or what he put me in, Tommy wanted me in the show and Tommy was pushing for me and Tommy loved my curves.” And clearly, he’s not the only designer who has fallen in love with the model, curves or no.
